Weekly Dog Name: Rutger – August 16th, 2007

This week’s dog name is:

Rutger

Rutger is a 10 year old Maltese who was rescued from a pet store nightmare and made a miraculous comeback. His nicknames are: Bo0Boo, MooMoo, Shmoo, RutgerMan, LittleMan, and Rutger Howler!

He loves to sit on anyone’s lap and steal the back of someone’s sandwich, as they are getting ready to take a bite!

Rutger says to NEVER Purchase pet supplies from stores that sell puppies! If we all stop going to these Pet Stores, then eventually they will go out of business, and so will the Puppy Mills.

Some stores work with their local humane societies by having animals in their stores that are up for adoption, and these are the places we need to support. Adoption is best, but if you want a “Registered Dog”, find a local breeder who can show you, or give you an address, where you can SEE BOTH parents of the puppy.

“Registered papers” in pet stores are FAKE! They are useless pieces of paper, with no value whatsoever! Don’t be fooled by paying hundreds, or thousands of dollars for what is probably an inbred puppy with lots of health problems!

Dog Name of The Week: Sushi – July 10th, 2007

This week’s dog name is:

Sushi

Sushi is a pure bred Shiba Inu , and a wonderful dog who loves peanut butter! He is full of energy and provides a good laugh every single day. He is a very happy dog, that loves his "spoilings" aka being petted and massaged. He loves to play hide & seek, sometimes fetch, but mainly doing the Shiba 500 in the backyard.

The Shiba Inu is the smallest of the six original and distinct breeds of dog from Japan. A small, agile dog that copes well with mountainous terrain, the Shiba Inu was originally bred for hunting. Shibas are generally independent and intelligent dogs. They have a reputation for aloofness with strangers and other animals. The Shiba is a fastidious breed and feels the need to maintain themselves in a clean state. They can often be seen to lick their paws and legs much like a cat. They generally go out of their way to keep their coats clean and whilst walking will avoid stepping in puddles, mud and dirt.

Dog And Name Of The Week – June 26th, 2007

This week’s dog name is:

Buddy Boy

For the most part Buddy dislikes having his picture taken – as you can tell from this photo – he won’t even look at the camera!

He is an Aussie Shep and almost 15 years old! He loves to ride in the car and he really loves to bark and chase cats.

His favorite toys are anyone’s feet or ankles who are walking by, he likes to chew on them!

A very laid back dog, but a regular magician when it comes to finding a way out of a yard. If there is a tiny hole, he will find it and be out exploring. Therefore, he is rarely left out alone for too long!

Thank you Buddy Boy for sharing!

Dog Name of the Week – June 20th, 2007

This week’s name is:

Mattie

This great name and picture was sent in by one of our readers, and as you can see, Mattie loves to smell flowers!

Mattie is short for Matilda. She is a 10 month old Miniature Schnauzer who was adopted by her loving family when she was 6 months old.

As her human companion Jo Ann Casper states:

“We just returned from a trip to the mountains where Mattie announces when deer are approaching the yard. She screeches, and barks, and jumps up and down, with her nose pressed against the window. Normally she is mellow and laid back, but when she spots a deer, it’s complete havoc until it leaves.”

“This past weekend a bear trotted through the side yard. We were on the front porch. I quickly put Mattie inside. I can’t imagine what she would have done if she saw it.”

Overall this is a great picture and Mattie is very cute!

Asta The Wire-Haired Fox Terrier – June 5th, 2007

This week’s name is:

Asta

Asta (born Skippy) was a Wire-Haired Fox Terrier best known for his acting work in the 1934 detective comedy The Thin Man. He was trained by owners Henry East and Gale Henry East, and Frank Weatherwax. His other notable film performances include The Awful Truth (1937), as Mr. Smith, the subject of a custody dispute between Cary Grant and Irene Dunne; Bringing Up Baby (1938), as George, the bone-hiding pup belonging to Katharine Hepburn’s aunt; and Topper Takes a Trip (1938), as Mr. Atlas. Due to the enormous popularity of Asta, interest in pet terriers skyrocketed.

Interestingly, the original character of Asta in Dashiell Hammett’s book of the The Thin Man was not a Wire-Haired Fox Terrier, but a Schnauzer.

The American Magazine detailed Asta’s professional life in an August 1938 profile of the East kennels, titled “A Dog’s Life in Hollywood”:

His owner is Mrs. Gale Henry East, once a prominent movie comedienne. … “When Skippy has to drink water in a scene, the first time he does it he really drinks, If there are retakes and he’s had all the water he can drink, he’ll go through the scene just as enthusiastically as though his throat were parched, but he’ll fake it. If you watch closely you’ll see he’s just going through the motions of lapping and isn’t really picking up water at all. And, because he has a sense of humor, he loves it when you laugh and tell him you’ve caught him faking but that it’s all right with you.

“Treat a dog kindly and he’ll do anything in the world for you.”
