As a dog owner, one of your most important jobs is choosing a name for your dog. A name is more than just something you yell when your dog is getting into trouble – it is also a description of his personality. If you need help finding the perfect name for your dog, consider some of these famous dog names from television shows and movies.
- Lassie – The famous TV show Lassie starred a beautiful female Collie of the same name. This show is based on a short story written by Eric Knight which was later expanded into a full-length novel and then developed into a TV show. Lassie is known for her devotion to her human friend Timmy as well as for her intelligence and resourcefulness.
- Benji – This name belongs to a mixed-breed dog who starred in several movies filmed between 1974 and 2000. Known for being in the right place at the right time, Benji was beloved by everyone in his community and, in the end, he was the hero of the story.
- Eddie – This name belongs to the cutest, furriest cast member for the show “Frasier”. Eddie was a Jack Russel terrier and, during the height of the show, he received more fan letters than any of the other cast members. Eddie’s real name was Moose and he was the runt of his litter. It only goes to show that the best things come in small packages!
- Stella – The French Bulldog owned by the Pritchett family in the Modern Family TV show is named Stella, though her real name is Brigitte. The original dog was replaced for the fourth season of the show by a dog named Beatrice.
- Snoopy – Perhaps the most famous dog in television history is Snoopy the beagle from the Charlie Brown comic strip and the associated TV program. Easy to identify for his white body and black ears, Snoopy is also easily identifiable for his goofy personality. Any dog with a love for life and a bit of a silly side would be lucky to have this name.
- Beethoven – This name belongs to the big, drooling St. Bernard who starred in the films of the same name. While Beethoven was known for causing trouble (largely due to his size and his clumsy nature), he was loyal to a fault and, in the end, protected his family when they needed him most.
- Old Yeller – Based on a 1956 Newbery Honor-winning novel by Fred Gipson, Old Yeller was made into a movie by Walt Disney in 1957. This movie follows the story of a stray dog named Old Yeller who was adopted by a boy in post-Civil War Texas. Though he eventually met an unfortunate end, Old Yeller was the most loyal canine companion ever seen.
- Otis – The Adventures of Milo and Otis starred an orange tabby kitten (Milo) and a pug named Otis who become best friends and accidentally get lost together which results in a great adventure as they find their way home.
- Hooch – Hooch is the canine companion to Tom Hanks who plays an American detective named Turner in the 1989 film, Turner and Hooch. Though he had a tendency to drool and get into trouble, this pair still managed to save the day.
- Brian – The dog character from the animated series Family Guy is Brian Griffin. Brian is an anthropomorphic dog who walks on his hind legs and talks just like any other member of the family.
